Book Review: Lost and Found by Natalie Shampanier

Hello everyone! I’m back with another book review! Today’s review is about the story, “Lost and Found” by Natalie Shampanier. This is a children’s picture book best suited for ages 2-8 years old. It’s a lovely story about finding a place to belong. This book might be short, but it’s full of attractive illustrations that will appeal to your child to be involved with it.

About the book- Summer camp is over, and a toy named “Dino Boy” finds himself left behind in the sandbox. He ends up being taken to the lost and found area, where there are several other lost toys that are feeling sad- Moody, a Unicorn Mood ring, Hamburger Hippo, who eats when he is feeling blue, and Ballerina Tina, a dancing toy inside a jewelry box. They decide to break out of the lost and found to go find their forever homes. Along the way, they find themselves on quite the adventure, only to end up back in the lost and found! But, not for long because shortly after their return, new kids arrive to camp and each of the toys finds a new “forever home”!

This book is written in a clever and fun way. It’s full of rhymes on each page. The lesson and theme of the book is that everyone deserves to be loved and to belong. There is also a sense of never giving up as the toys face several challenges on their adventure. The illustrations are beautifully done and so colorful too! I believe kids will enjoy this book because of the rhyming and the toys! So many kids love dinosaurs and unicorns.

The author, a family therapist, was inspired to write this book because she has counseled children that were adopted or are being fostered. Her aim is to instill hope in these children. This book could be a great tool in helping all kids to learn about adoption. It could also serve to teach children how to be empathetic towards foster and adopted kids.

Teaching kids to face adversity, to be emotionally intelligent, and the power of hope in better days is the subtle theme of this book.
